Should I buy the Ironmaster 75 lb Quick Lock Adjustable Dumbbell System?
The best.
These dumbells lock up as tight as solid gym DBs, so they can be used safely and quietly for explosive work like full-body swings. They have perfectly proportioned handles that comfortably accommodate one and two-handed work, and compact square plates that are heavier than they look. Asymetrical loading for leverage work is easy and stable. The wide, flat inner permanent collars and big, flat-head, quick-lock pins make them comfortable in many positions not possible with other models: Horizontally and vertically, they're stable on the floor, and the ends can be held with palms up, between feet, knees, thighs for a great variety of movements. They're not as quick-change as Bowflex/Nautilus,(whose handles stay very long even at the lightest weights), or PowerBlocks,(whose cage-like handles are weird, uncomfortable, and technically limiting), but they're the quickest of the serious DBs and the most serious DBs of any adjustable models./// 2010 EDIT: After over four years, these dbs look & perform as brand new. (My PowerBlocks were a mess after a few weeks: scraped paint, bent connector rods, damaged adjustment fork.) ONE SUGGESTION: Since these are more suitable for heavy work than other similar products, how about designing a model that -begins- at 20-25 lbs?, the lightest that many men ever use. The permanent plate could be built bit higher than the add-on plates, to allow easy plate-changing while the db is on the floor.
The best dumbbells!
I have had the Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells in my home gym for about 2 years now. They are much stronger than the others out there and lock up tight to feel like regular dumbbells at the health club and take up very little room. It takes a little bit of time to make a change, but it is way worth the effort. The stand is super strong too. I have been weight training for over 20 years and been to all the big gyms and tried just about everything for the home gym. Since I had a small space to deal with at home I only have a few items in my gym. With a good set of dumbells (these) and a good bench you can do just about everything you need for bodybuilding. You won't be dissapointed!
Compatibility is a plus
A quick cost analysis (per dumbell):
Ironmaster 75lb at $224.5 = $3 per pound (increments in 2.5lb) includes pedestal stand, expandable to 125lb
Turbobells 60lb at $150 = $2.5 per pound (increments in 2.5lb) includes tripodlike stand, not expandable
Bowflex 52.5lb at $189.5 = $3.6 per pound (increments in 5lb) includes weight tray, not expandable
Powerblock 60lb at $184.5 = $3.1 per pound (increments in 5lb) No stand, not expandable
VersaBell 50lb at $131.5 = $2.63 per pound (increments in 10lb) includes weight tray, not expandable
One major advantage of Ironmaster is that it has 1-inch holes which will fit standard 1-inch threaded weight bars including the spin-lock ez-curl bars. So you can easily turn dumbells into barbells.
Dumbbell extraordinaire.....
Picking an adjustable dumbbell is a pretty large task, particularly considering the numerous products on the market. In my research, I tried and worked out with 5-6 adjustable dumbbells, including Powerblock, Ironmaster, Freemotion, Soloflex, Bowflex, etc. In the end, it came down to a competition between Ironmaster and Powerblock. Let me give you a little history first....
When I decided to initially buy an adjustable dumbbell set, I was determined to purchase Powerblocks, no matter what. I was caught up in the idea of being able to change weights extremely fast and Powerblock dumbbells fit the bill. So enamored was I with this aspect of PB, I was simply going to buy before sampling the product. My better angels ultimately coerced me out of my overactive enthusiasm, and I decided to research the adjustable dumbbell market before I took the plunge and committed to a particular dumbbell. Considering the price of adjustable dumbbells, I would definitely recommend researching different brands before you make a decision to commit to any particular company.
In the end, I chose Ironmaster Quick-Lock dumbbells. Here are my reasons....
-Ironmaster QLs are extremely safe and exceedingly durable in comparison to other adjustable dumbbells. You never have to worry about a weight detaching from its base in the middle of an exercise (can't say the same for other adjustable dumbbells), and Ironmasters are built to take a beating. They are extremely solid and built to last a lifetime, and can be dropped if you lift to failure (again, can't say the same for other adjustable dumbbells). One of the major problems I had with Powerblock was the weightstacks continually rattled while lifting. This proved to be an extreme irritant and one of the main reasons I went with Ironmaster. There is no rattle with Ironmaster, and they are just as solid as any dumbbell you'd find in any commercial gym.
-The aesthetics of the Ironmaster dumbbell is quite attractive. It's simple and very sophisticated in appearance. Ironmaster is really a beautifully designed dumbbell.
-I prefer the traditonal dumbbell design you will find with Ironmaster, in comparison to the cage design you find with Powerblock. Ironmaster's design allows you to do any type of exercise you desire. You are not limited to what you can do, unlike PB. The Ironmasters have a completely different feel in contradistinction to PB, as well. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that IM dumbbells are all metal, and Powerblocks have a lot of plastic incorporated into their design. I feel as if IM dumbbells have more targeting potential than PB.
-The relative ease of weight plate change was a bonus with IM, particularly considering my expectations coming into the adjustable dumbbell market. Mind you, Powerblocks are easier to change than Ironmasters, but the difference is negligible considering every other benefit you get with Ironmaster dumbbells. The rapidity of weight change was a deal breaker when I decided to buy an adjustable dumbbell set, but became less important after I tried Powerblocks and Ironmaster Quick-Locks.
-Finally, and I must admit this wasn't a huge factor in my decision, but it was a nice side benefit. Ironmaster provides a stand for your dumbbells that is included in the purchase price of the set. It will store your dumbbells and your 120lb add on kit (if you decide you ever want to lift heavier weights).
In sum, Ironmaster, in my opinion, is the superior dumbbell. I researched adjustable dumbbells for around 2 months prior to purchase, and I'm very glad I did my research because, in the end, I feel I received the most for my money. All adjustable dumbbell sets are very expensive, and the best advice I can give is before you commit to any particular brand you should research, research, research. Like myself, people are sometimes initially exposed to a particular brand of dumbbell and they somehow solidify that brand as the only brand they want. Almost happened to me and glad it didn't. Do your research. I recommend this dumbbell to anyone who is looking for a solid, durable, and reliable weight training tool.
The very best way to go, in my opinion
I did a lot of research before purchasing. I looked at buying a used set of individual dumbbells, but the racks take up a lot of room, not to mention the total weight. And most of the adjustable dumbbells were unwieldy or shoddy (or both). The Ironmasters are built to last a lifetime.
A big difference between these and other adjustables is that the bar is only as wide as the weights you're using. This makes an e huge difference in maintaining good form, not to mention the ease of resting on your thighs when working with heavier weights.
Cosmetically, they are very attractive. They look even better than in the photos. The square shape is a big plus in my opinion, especially great for setting down on the floor.
There is absolutely no rattle, shifting or movement of the weights once tightened. And once tightened, it ain't coming off until you take it off. It's a remarkably simple but ingenious design. I find them somehow even better balanced and easier to handle than pro weight room dumbbells.
The stand is compact and not too tall. It's the perfect size.
The only drawback, of course, is that you have to manually add and remove weights. I am not the fastest in the world at this, but I had my son time me so that I could write this review:
Adding 20 pounds to one dumbbell (10 on each end) take me 30 seconds. So two dumbbells take 60 seconds. But if I rushed, I could do it faster.
Removing the same 20 pounds from one dumbbell take me 20 seconds, so two take 40 seconds. Again, I could probably do it faster if I wanted. I'm not in that big of a rush. Anything within 60 seconds is fine with me.
If you're looking for dumbbell sets, your choices are:
1. Individual dumbbells (most convenient of all, but more space required, and it's a lot of total weight)
2. Adjustable dumbbells with a switch or pin (faster than Ironmasters, but not nearly as easy to use in the motions, and not as safe/solid)
3. Ironmasters (more professional but slower than the other adjustables)
In my opinion, the Ironmasters are the best value, certainly one of the best value purchases I've made in a long time. And my order arrived nearly a week earlier than I expected. Highly recommended, as you can tell!
