Should I buy the Weider Tech PowerSwitch Pair of 50 lb. Adjustable Weights WNSAW10007?
Convenient, high quality, easy to use
I'd been looking at products like this for a long time, and finally settled on the Weider Powerswitch. Quite frankly, I am thrilled. The weights feel good in your hands, change weight easily, and work exactly as expected. Compared to the Bowflex Selectech weights, these have mostly metal parts, instead of all plastic, and a simpler internal operating mechanism. I expect these will last longer and take much more abuse than the Bowflex. And keep in mind, these are $100 cheaper, and come with the stand. The Bowflex weights don't. My suggestion, if you are thinking about buying something like this, is to go into a store near you and compare the two side by side. That's what I did, and it made the decision a very easy one. I bought the Weider version, and I couldn't be happier.
aftermarket addon
these are the best I've used ,very happy and buffing up well..
Ok the trays are plastic and if you hammer the dumbells in and out they will
shatter after a while , takes a bit of practice
(I Teflon coated the plates at the edge to slip in out of tray)
SOMEONE make a cnc aluminium aftermarket tray addon please? < $20!
for the bad habit dumbell droppers / throwers , they can be broken if thrown or dropped*
* the handles can be too much of a handful for the wife to get a grip
** the weider rubber logo in the handles will come out if desired
*** the aluminium handles will discolor with use but can be scrubbed up clean
if you are sloppy with plate changes you can pick up unlocked plates that will drop out
on you!!!
they are bigger than they appear!
Great product, to be used by those with working brain cells... :)
I just purchased this product today, and began using it. Everything is perfectly packaged. I admit that I was surprised with how weighty the stand is, but I'm glad because it does provide the necessary support.
Assembly: The diagram and directions were easy enough to follow (assuming that you find all materials in order and lay them out beforehand to see what you'll be doing); a hex wrench and a bolt wrench are conveniently included with the bolts and screws. Assembly itself took MAYBE 10 minutes; I'd just advise not overtightening the trays upon which the dumbbells will sit, as the trays are plastic. Also note: the image shown by the manufacturer for the product IS misleading, as the stand is NOT tilted/slanted; the graphic designer in their Marketing department gets a "D-" for that one. The top platform faces upward and therefore sits parallel with the bottom platform, though bolted into the top of the cylinder/column at a 90-degree turn, seen when viewing it from above. Anyway, keeping the platforms parallel obviously better supports both dumbbell trays such that they prevent themselves from sliding downward and potential injury. However, if you don't like the stand, then just don't assemble or use it.
Usage: No assembly is required for the dumbbells themselves, and using them is as expected: lift and slide the lever, then drop the lever into place over the selected weight (the directions also mention this...). Other reviews have people complaining about sticking weights, being impossible to maneuver, etc. That's nuts. Let's explain why: they're not lifting the dumbbell straight out or placing it straight back in. Very difficult... yeah. But, I purposely messed around with the dumbbells before I began using them to see it from another's perspective. Now, with a tiny bit of inspection before use, one can clearly see that proper aim and just a li'l coordination MUST be accomplished. Slowly and carefully lifting the dumbbell in and out of the tray should ensure that plates properly remove and re-insert themselves respectively. I used the dumbbell for several exercises for around 1.5 hours earlier, and had zero trouble. Taking one's time also lessens the risks of ANY equipment dropping. The plates held inside each dumbbell quite nicely, and while I admit that it's a little bulkier than what I'm used to using and I'm only 95% confident in the use of a hard (yet admittedly sturdy) plastic for the weight latching system (the bar and "collar" are metal, however, which is expected), I can do the full range of exercises that I want.
Treat it -like any other exercise equipment- with respect, don't drop the damn things, and you'll reap the rewards. I highly recommend this item as it does the job, can be put to the side quite nicely, and I believe it'll last for the long haul.
Just what I needed
I just got these Weider Tech PowerSwitch dumbbells last week from a competitor that was selling them for $299.99. Only the floor model was left, so they gave me an additional 15% off! I've been looking for adjustable dumbbells for months and had not been able to find a set of Bowflex dumbbells on a display that were not broken, so I knew that I didn't want Bowflex. I had also looked at the PowerBlock and had initially wanted to purchase a set, but when I came across this deal, I couldn't pass it up. The Weider dumbbells are solidly constructed. My only concern is the plastic tab that is pulled to adjust the metal parts holding the metal plates. At this point, I believe that without abuse, it will last well.
It is true that you must carefully put the dumbbells back into place in order to add or "drop" plates, but with a bit of practice, they slide right into place. The key is not to force them but to giggle the dumbbell a bit so that the plates can slip into their grooves. I also like the fact that this set comes with the stand which is just the right height for making the adjustments.
I have also found this set to be a great time saver as it only takes seconds to change the weight of the dumbbells instead of nearly a minute with my old fashioned adjustable dumbbells. I can now finish a workout in about half the time.
Best Bang For The Buck! A lot of options in a couple of square feet.
After much research, I purchased Weider's adjustable dumbbell set. I'm very satisfied with the purchase and consider it to be the best bang for the buck. Wait for a sale, and you can get this set for $300 or less. That's a great deal considering that it includes the stand. It's a quality set that provides a lot of options and only takes up about 2 square feet of floor space. It looks good sitting there too.
What I like about this 100 lb. set is that each dumbbell will adjust in 5 lb. increments with an even number of plates. Many of the competing sets only adjust evenly in 10 lb. increments. This set will also adjust int 2.5 lb. increments if you don't mind the plates being uneven.
The adjustment is quick and easy. Just slide a couple of tabs to the desired weight. Out of the box, my set worked pretty well with just a bit of hanging-up now and then. I wiped down the sliding mechanism and plates with 3-in-1 oil, and now the adjustment is very smooth. The selecting mechanism itself seems to be well made, and I suspect that it will hold up well over time. The tab on top is plastic, but the rest of it is metal.
Some have complained about the plates sticking. I'm just careful to keep the handles and plates straight when I'm removing the dumbbells from the tray and when reinserting them. Taking that extra second to keep the plates straight prevents most of the sticking and also allows the adjustment mechanism to continue to slide freely. I have noticed that my stand has a flat top (some photos show angled tops). Having flat trays probably helps.
At first, each dumbbell seemed kind of large (especially at the lower weight settings), but I've found that I still get a good, full range of motion. The grips are a little thick, but I still get plenty of hold with my medium sized hand. The rubber section on the grip is a nice touch.
Depending upon the exercise being performed, I sometimes can hear the plates clanking against one another. I like it, though. Nothing like the sound of weight plates banging around. It just means that muscles are growin'!
There are a few sets on the market that are basically the same item with different branding. For example, Gold's Gym has a set that seems to be the same as Weider's, except for different colored selector tabs and a different decal on the stand. So, do your shopping and find the best deal.
